INTERNATIONAL CAMP 2012

Dates:

4-8 June 2012 (Monday – Saturday)

Venue:

Camp Christine, MOE Jalan Bahtera Campsite and Sarimbun Campsite

Guide Participants:

1 patrol of 8 Guides (maximum 2 patrols per company)

Brownie Participants:

6 Brownies per Pack (and must be from primary 4 to 6)

Guider Attendance:

It is compulsory that at least 1 Adult Leader attends the camp together with the Guides/Brownies. All Guiders must play a role at the camp. The details of the various responsibilities are attached.

Camp Fee:

S$180 per girl (inclusive of activities and excursion charges). The camp fee is to be submitted only after the Coy/Pack’s registration for the camp has been accepted.

Dorothy Chan Camp Assistance Fund:

Brownies and Guides may apply for the Dorothy Chan Camp Assistance Fund if they cannot afford to pay the full amount of the camp fee. The details and application form are available from the GGS website at http://www.girlguides.org.sg/forms_download/. This form is only to be submitted when the Coy/Pack’s registration for the camp has been accepted.

Kit List:

The personal camp kit list will be sent to confirmed participants at a later date.

All Brownies will sleep in dormitories but will be required to bring their own sleeping bags.

Guide participants are required to sleep under tentage.

Tents and gadget poles will not be provided. Each Guide patrol is required to bring its own tent to camp. (Subject to availability, tents may be rented.) The tent may be canvas or nylon, A-frame ridge or dome tents. Sub-camps are not expected to build gadgets.

Activities:

Kayaking, high elements, night cycling, pioneering, backwoodsman cooking, nature trails etc.

Registration Process:

The closing date is 31 October 2011( It has been extended ). As there are limited places, participation at the camp is on a 1st-come-1st-served basis. Companies/Packs are to submit the following:

1) Participant list (please note that there is a different form for Brownies and Guides).

2) Consent form for every girl listed in the participation list.

Hardcopies must be submitted via post to or in person at Guide House, attention to Ms Chui Sheok Cheng. Fax and e-mail submissions will NOT be accepted.

The International Camp organizing committee will inform Packs/Companies if their registration is successful. Companies/Packs will then submit the soft copy of the participation list and arrange the payment for the camp.

Criteria Of Badges

COMPUTER

1. 1.1 Able to discuss with the examiner the development of the computer, its past history, present trends and future developments.

1.2 Draw a block diagram of a typical microcomputer, describe the various component parts and briefly explain their functions in the working of a microcomputer.

1.3 Describe 4 types of Data Storage Devices.

1.4 Know the differences between computer systems.

(Micro, Mini, Medium and Computer System).

EITHER

2. Write a programme design (or flow chart) of a routine which you perform daily and produce a programme design (or flow chart) for a programme you have written.

OR

3.1 Able to illustrate 6 applications of modern computers in business, education, health and science.

3.2 List 3 examples of applications /softwares that are present in a common computer and describe its functions. (Example: Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader, Photoshop,Windows Meadia Player, etc.)

DENTAL HEALTH

1. Know the structure and function of teeth.

2. Make a model of a tooth with whatever materials that can be used.

3. Know the various oral hygiene aids and their correct use.

4. Know the importance of good nutrition for good dental health.

5. Name 6 foods which contain free sugars and how they affect dental health.

6. Demonstrate how a younger child can be taught to practice good oral hygiene.

ENVIRONMENTALIST

For this badge, guides may work alone or in groups of not more than 4.

There are altogether 4 clauses to complete:

1. Select two of the videotapes listed in Appendix I and view them before embarking on the other clauses.

2. Make either a Log Book, a short video (not more than 15 min) or a slide presentation on one of the following items:

2.1 Saving valuable resources (e.g. water, trees/wood/paper, fuel lie petroleum, electricity, metals etc). State the importance of saving on resources and give practical suggestions on how to do so. List environmental friendly alternatives. Give specific brands/ models (e.g. XXX bulbs consume less energy) if relevant. Discuss the possibilities of re-cycling to lower the depletion of raw materials.

2.2 List substances which are harmful to the environment (e.g. toxic wastes, harmful nitrates, excessive amount of carbon dioxide, ozone etc.) and how they are introduced into the environment (e.g. through manufacturing etc.). Suggest ways to combat their consumption.

2.3 Make a research into how garbage is disposed in Singapore. What are the problems? Visit incinerators if possible. Show how some of the wastes can be reduced, reused, or even recycled.

2.4 Make a study of an animal which has been declared ‘endangered’ and show how Man was responsible for the cause of its near extinction. Suggest how Man may reverse his actions in an effort to protect it.

2.5 Collect articles from newspapers and magazines illustrating how actions of people harm, or help, the environment. Study what a government, voluntary or commercial agency has done to help protect the environment.

2.6 Make a list of government, and either voluntary or commercial agencies which have undertaken projects in relation to environmental protection. Make a careful study of one of the projects, showing its contributions.

3. 3.1 Using scarp materials, make a practical and useful object (the craft should not be ornamental). Detail what materials have been used (e.g. unwanted paper from an old torn garment). No new materials ought to be purchased for the making of this item.

OR

3.2 Make a poster or collage depicting any theme on protecting and caring for the environment. The poster/collage should be displayed in school.

National Heritage Badge

Information for Guides and Guiders

What is the National Heritage Badge?

The Heritage Badge is a badge of distinction. It is awarded to those who have the passion, commitment and drive to learn about, research and share their knowledge of matters related to Singapore's history, culture and beliefs. The badge is awarded by the National Heritage Board to deserving students who have completed a heritage project specified by the Board.

Who is eligible for this badge?

For secondary school who are in any uniformed group like Girl Guides who have been enrolled.

What must be done to obtain this badge?

All you have to do is to complete any one of the projects listed by the National Heritage Board (within maximum 3 months).

i. Projects

1. Designing a Heritage Trail

2. Undertaking Research Projects; e.g.designing information booklet on Monuments in Singapore e.g. tracing your or someone's genealogy, ie, family tree

3. Creating a multi-media programmer CD-ROM, or web-based project on Heritage topics

4. Promotion of National Symbols, eg. exhibition, information booklets, board game, card game

5. Volunteering at NHB events/ exhibitions and other projects related to Heritage in consultation with NHB (to be advised by NHB on availability)

ii. Award of Badge

The assessment is done by the Guider(s). The badge is awarded only if the project meets the following criteria:

1. Level of commitment, ie; see through the project right from the beginning till the end

2. Professionalism and quality of project

3. Ability to show that he or she has learn and benefited from the project. (research and documentation of the project)

iii. Submission & Collection of Badge

The badge will be awarded by the UG Headquarters after the projects have been assessed by Guider(s). The Guider will need to fill the Badge Certificate & Badge Summary List and submit it to Guide House, General Office.

The I/Cs for the respective groups, please take note that you will have to prepare and hand in a proposal each for the respective componenets that you are in charge of, excluding tentage.

For the gateway and kitchen dresser groups, do keep in mind that as there will be time, space and manpower limits, try to keep your structures small but at the same time innovative and unique.

For the gateway groups, you are encouraged to incorporate the use of recycled materials as part of your design.

As for the outdoor games groups, you guys are to design an outdoor game based on the 5 point programme.

The dateline for the proposals are by the 25th of March, the first friday of term 2, before CCA starts, in hard copy only. Please hand in your proposals to Shi Hui, Samantha and Jillian respectively according to your coys.

Homemaker's Badge Criteria

Criteria for Homemaker's Badge - Sec 4s

*1. Letter from parent to prove that you have been doing housework for 4 consecutive weeks, including making the bed, washing your shoes, washing the dishes etc.

*2. Simple repairs. Sew with herringbone stitch in a thread that is the same colour as the cloth. Please bring your SEWN sample on Wednesday as there is something else we need to sew on the cloth. Not able to use the sample we did in Sec 2.

3. Table-laying:

- Plan a well-balanced meal (Western, Chinese, Indian. Chinese and Western meals are preferred) with consideration of the food groups in the food pyramid: Fats, Fibre, Protein, Carbohydrates.

- Lay out the table with the right plates and utensils to use. Lesson will be given on Wednesday's Guides session.

4. Bed-Making

- Lesson will be give on Wednesday's Guides session.

5. Changing a light-bulb

- Very simple, lesson will be given on Wednesday's Guides session.

6. Theory Test

- Study the food pyramid, how to store food, how to use leftovers. Simple lesson on Wednesday.

7. Making pineapple jam at home

- Will be making it on Wednesday.

8. Pay $5 for the test.

Please bring your simple repairs cloth, a bedsheet (not those elastic ones, those that are just one plain cloth without any stitching) on Wednesday. Notes will be given on Wednesday as well. The test is on Friday (:

Girl Guides Overseas Camps 2011

Click here and here for more information about 2 optional upcoming overseas camps. NOTE: cost of the camp does not include airfare, travel insurance and miscellaneous costs. GGS will try to apply for subsidies from MOE but it's not guaranteed that we'll get a subsidy. Also, subsidies may only come 1 to 3 months after you return from the camp. There will be selection interview for those who are interested in the camps.

The countries are Hong Kong and Korea. We strongly encourage you guys to go for these camps!

Hello guides!

This concerns the Retest Day on the 26th Nov as well as Open House on 27th Nov, Saturday. EVERYONE WHO NEEDS A RETEST(S) must come back to school on 26th November, Friday for your retest, especially if you wish to get your Bronze, Silver or Gold by this year. If you have passed all the tests that your cohort has already taken, you do not have to come for the Retest Day. Those who cannot make it for valid reasons (eg overseas) or have no retests, please SMS your PL.

Retest timing: 8am - 1pm (Can come any time between this timing, need not stay for whole day)

For committees such as Gateway, Gadgets and other comms that have practices on 26th, your retests will go on concurrently.

Attire: PE shirt/Guides shirt and PE shorts.

As for Open House, only Gateway, Gadgets, Outdoor Cooking, Display and Tour Leaders have to come back on the 27th. ICs of these committees, please arrange your Guides into shifts unless you're planning to stay the whole day. Eg, Gateway has to stay the entire day (check with IC).

here's the updated design for the sngg hoodie. it's now a pullover instead of a jacket and will be a light shade of navy blue. (similar to that of the darker blue guide uniform) sizes range from XS to XL. S size: size 40 PE shirt. please let your PLs know if you would like to order the hoodie by THIS FRIDAY. (27/08) the font colour for "SNGUIDES" and "we're gonna let it shine" will be gold. the text for "we're gonna let it shine" is rather blurred here, this will not be the case on the actual hoodie. if you've any suggestions or comments, please tag on the tagboard.

Guides who wish to be selected for the contingent MUST attend ALL the internal trainings.

We would appreciate it if you could follow the following criteria closely:

1. Secondary 2 & 3 Guides ONLY (Guides from Secondary 1 & 4 will not be accepted).
2. Singaporeans or PR
3. Minimum height 1.60 m
4. Have basic knowledge of foot drill
5. Not suffering from the following illnesses – asthma, vertigo, angina, gastritis, allergic to heat and perspiration (rashes), not able to stand in the sun for more than 20 minutes, weak ankles, etc.
6. Guides who are severely overweight (>130%) or severely underweight (<70%)>
7. Participants MUST be able to attend at least 80% of the training sessions.
8. Guides who need to be away for a long period from Singapore during the June school vacation are advised not to participate.

CCA points will be awarded should you get selected to participate in the NDP.

We are pleased to inform you that the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) is organising the "1 Year To Go to the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games" event on Friday, 14 August 2009, to mark exactly 365 days to the S2010 YOG. The event aims to generate international awareness, raise anticipation levels and rally everyone in Singapore to come together and celebrate, as we look forward to hosting the inaugural YOG in August 2010.

There will be an evening celebration at the City Hall which will be preceded by a sports carnival on the Padang. The carnival will commence at about 1730 hrs. The highlight of the evening celebrations will be the unveiling of the Omega-sponsored countdown clock at City Hall, followed by the countdown to D-365:00:00 at 2010 hrs.> GGS is privileged to support S2010 YOG. SYOGOC would like as many people to come go down to the event and be part of the celebrations.
